Have you ever thought about what the perfect gift could be? I’ve been thinking about this for a few days now. This is my list of qualities that the perfect gift would have. It would have to…

be free and available to all people

have value, bordering on the magnificent

have the ability to transform people’s lives

have to get rid of all the bad crap in life (like death and disease)

have a sense of justice and protection

give the receiver sense of value so they could know their value

be cute

have to meet the unarticulated needs of the human race that they try to assuage with all sorts of things like drugs or food

have to bring hope and peace and goodwill to everyone, in fact it could change a life in such a way that these things could be experienced on a daily basis

have to make all the wrongs right

have to know and understand all things (it could see and touch a heart)

have to spread love from the receiver to those who have not been given this gift yet

have the ability to give wisdom and insight

have to create a sense of anticipation for it’s coming

be multifaceted (continuously be rediscovered)

be revealed in a secret, quiet moment with hints and clues that lead to it’s discovery

Well that’s quite a long list. Sorry if I lost you. I don’t think it’s complete yet though. Maybe you can add some other aspects to this list of the perfect gift. It got me thinking though about a gift that was given a long time ago (“For unto us a son is given…” and “…the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight…”). Could it be that the most perfect gift has been designed already?

I’d like this blog to be about design and giving. An odd combination you might say, but both are what I’m passionate about. I’m a big proponent of giving what you are good at and what has been given you. Both of these are strengths of mine so my blog will be about lending that strength to you.

I wonder too if design thinking is what makes me the giver I am. Designers at heart like to solve problems and we see this happening on a global scale now. Think about One Laptop per Child. The vision was to give children everywhere the opportunity to access learning through the internet. Design solved it by rethinking the entire process of manufacturing and distributing laptops in order to essentially give this ‘gift’ of learning to children everywhere.
