My father was recently diagnosed with Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration, a disease that results in damage to the front of the brain, causing a progressive decline in language and behavioral abilities. I have watched my father’s speech noticeably decline for about 9 months now, and there is a possibility that he will lose all speaking abilities within 25 years. This event has brought about many conversations between the Lord and myself, and reflections on memories I’ve had.
I often hear my father pray, and he can never quite get the right words out. It can be hard to listen, and even harder knowing it’s not getting any better. But even now, when Daddy can’t speak as well, God knows his heart. God can hear him perfectly, and He understands. God’s love is no less for him because he can’t say it right. It’s a beautiful picture of how God our Creator knows our hearts and minds. And I look forward to the day when my father will praise his Creator without stumbling, and his mind will be completely restored.
God’s love for us overcomes our shortcomings and knows our hearts. “You have searched me Lord, and you know me…Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.” Psalm 139:1,4
