My daughter just recently watched the Princess Bride (minus the scary parts) for the first time. She is fascinated by the movie and looks for opportunities to watch it again and again. It being one of my favorite movies as well, I got to thinking about what makes it unique besides everything. I came to the conclusion that it’s Wesley, who against all odds, comes for Buttercup in the hour of her greatest distress that makes it such a fascinating tale. How heroic and heartwarming this last minute change of events is.
And yet it seems oddly reminiscent of God’s story…our God is a warrior too, and in the end he is coming to set things aright, freeing the world from the harmful effects of man’s penchant for destructive behavior. In the Bible is written that after this destructive pattern has reached it’s worst and impending doom is upon the earth the following happens: “And I (John speaking) saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.” (Revelation 19:14 New American Standard Bible) It’s hope inducing and awe inspiring to realize that Jesus will come back in the end to conquer all and set things right.
