The reading today talks about discouragement and contrasts it to happiness. It’s an encouragement to give ourselves to cheerfulness. But have you ever been here?
“My plan is simply to shun the spirit of sadness…but unfortunately I am not always successful….sadness confronts me while I am on the highway to usefulness. And it stays face to face with me until my poor soul turns blue and sad! In fact, sadness discolors everything around me and produces a mental paralysis. Nothing has any appeal to me, future prospects seem clouded in darkness, and my soul loses all its aspirations and power!”
It’s so easy to get there and so difficult to get out of those funks. The reminder for me is to persevere and slug through over the long haul so that in the end the victor’s crown is mine.
“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
